What Vaccinations Does My Child Need for School?
Minnesota children must be up to date on certain vaccines to enter kindergarten, 7th grade, and 12th grade.
Kindergarten Requirements
Children entering kindergarten must have:
- 5 doses Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis (DTaP)
- 4 doses Polio (IPV)
- 3 doses Hepatitis B (Hep B)
- 2 doses Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
- 2 doses Varicella (Chickenpox)
7th Grade Requirements
Students entering 7th grade must have:
- 1 booster dose Tetanus, Diphtheria & Pertussis (Tdap)
- 1 dose Meningococcal ACWY vaccine
12th Grade Requirements
Students entering 12th grade must have:
- 1 booster dose of the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine
Where to Get Vaccinated
Your Child's Doctor's Office (Best Option)
Your child's health care provider knows their medical history and can give all recommended vaccines during a visit. Most clinics accept health insurance.
Public Health Clinics (Backup Option)
Local public health offices offer free or low cost vaccinations for eligible children through the Minnesota Vaccines for Children (MnVFC) program.
Pharmacies
Some pharmacies offer recommended vaccines for teens. Call ahead to confirm.
Need Help Paying?
Call your local Public Health office. Staff can check if your child qualifies for free or reduced cost vaccines through MnVFC.
No family is turned away based on ability to pay.
Who Qualifies for Minnesota Vaccines for Children Program (MnVFC)?
Children 18 years or younger who are any of the following:
- Uninsured
- Covered by Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare
- American Indian or Alaska Native
- Underinsured (Your child has insurance, but it does not cover vaccines)
